Description
INTRODUCTION With reduction in dehydration-associated deaths due to infantile gastroenteritis, persistent diarrhoea has been identified as one of the most important health threats among children living in the developing world (1-7). The World Health Organization (WHO) considers persistent diarrhoea as an important research priority (8). Although pathogenic agents and local gastrointestinal tract immunity are directly responsible for childhood morbidity and mortality due to diarrhoea, the importance of other factors, such as sociodemographic, environmental and clinical risk factors, along with infant-feeding practices needs to be clarified (5,7,9-12).
